Key factors behind the trend are the growing confidence of consumers when shopping online, and a wider range of clothes on offer.

One Welsh business expert warned yesterday that high street shops would lose more ground to the internet unless they made shopping a more pleasant experience.

Although the pounds 1.2bn of online sales accounted for just 3% of clothes and shoes sold in 2006, the upwards trend has become firmly established.

Mintel predicts that online retail sales of clothing and footwear will increase by a further 138% between 2006 and 2011, to reach pounds 2.9bn.

'The online clothing industry is still in relative infancy but there is little doubt that 2006 was the defining year for the online fashion market,' said Neil Mason, senior retail analyst at Mintel.

'Last year was the first year that the business case for selling fashion over the internet came close to being proven, and fashion retailers have only just started to see the justification in investing millions of pounds in improving their internet presence.'

He said many retailers began offering their entire ranges online last year.

'Fashion online has seen a wide range of innovation that will continue to attract consumers to the market. But the challenge for retailers is to make internet fashion shopping a more effective, enjoyable and profitable way of buying clothes than conventional home shopping has been until now.'

Professor Brian Morgan of Cardiff Business School, said, 'Catalogues had a dowdy image. They were out of date before they were printed.'

He said consumers were wary of catalogues where they could not sample the retailer's quality in shops, but now they are willing to buy online from trusted high street stores.

'I know people claim that shopping is one of the biggest hobbies, but it's not getting any easier to shop. It's becoming such a hassle to park and shop,' he added.

Figures released recently by Next show that its high street sales figures for July to January were down 6.9% on the same period in 2005. But catalogue sales from the Next Directory - which account for 22% of total sales - jumped 9.5%, with internet sales also improving.

And department store John Lewis reported a 60% surge in internet sales in just one year. Its post-Christmas sale began a day earlier online than it did in stores.
